The Song of Achilles

Ma critique du livre The Song of Achilles publiée sur GoodReads il y a quelques mois. Je la republie ici pour catalogage et me faciliter la vie. Vu que j’ai lu le livre en anglais, la revue est en anglais.

A story of rare sensitivity. The Song of Achilles is a retelling of the Trojan War. Told in the first person by Patroclus, it breathes personality and vitality into the tale.

Madeline Miller’s choice to centre her story on the exalted love between Patroclus and Achilles is inspired. It contrasts sharply with the savagery of the tale and of the era—especially towards women.

A solid knowledge of the classics only reinforces the tour de force: the novel remains remarkably faithful to the original text. Everything fits. Homer himself could (almost) have done no better.

A book that rekindled my love of quality reading.
